What is Reiki & how does it work?

Reiki is a Japanese form of energy healing. It is gentle and safe spiritual healing energy; it is intuitive and only helps, never harms. Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive, hands-on method of energy transfer. Energy flows through the hands of the practitioner into the body of the person being treated. It harmonizes and optimizes body/mind processes.

Reiki could also be called divine energy, universal energy, or source energy. Rather than thinking of the Reiki healer as giving “good energy,” it is the energy itself providing the healing.

Reiki knows what to do, where to go, and how long to stay present. Reiki has the ability to restore balance and health within the body’s energy system, bringing about emotional, spiritual, physical, and/or mental wellbeing.

What does Reiki feel like?

The Reiki experience varies from individuals.

Some people may drift off to sleep.
Some people may feel sensations of warmth or tingling.
Some people may feel like they are floating in a cloud or see colors or visions.
Some people may feel a surge of emotions.
Some people may not feel anything at all and that’s OKAY!
There are no good or bad sensations.

What would a typical Reiki
session with you look like?

Setting the Space:

The session is usually conducted in a calm, quiet environment with soft lighting, soothing music, and a tranquil atmosphere to encourage relaxation.

Initial Discussion:

Before the session begins, the client and I may discuss their needs, concerns, and intentions for the session.

Comfortable Positioning:

The client lies fully clothed on a massage table. A blanket may be provided if desired for warmth and security, as well as an eye mask. Soft music is played in the background ;crystals and essential oils may be used as well.

The Reiki Process:

I channel universal life energy (Reiki) through my hands to the client. This can be done with hands lightly touching the body or hovering just above it. Common focus areas include the head, shoulders, heart, stomach, and feet, but I may adjust based on intuition or the client’s needs. Reiki sessions are non-invasive and adaptable, making them suitable for people of all ages and health conditions.

How should I prepare for
a Reiki session?

To receive the most benefit from your Reiki session please try to:

  • Take some time to relax before the session.

  • Loose, comfortable clothing is recommended.

  • Make sure that you have eaten a snack and are hydrated so that you are not distracted by hunger or thirst.

  • Avoid eating a heavy meal so that your body’s energy is not directed towards digesting.

  • Avoid caffeine if possible.

What will I experience

during a Reiki session?

Your experience can vary from session to session and every “body” is unique.

You will connect deeper and have a more positive experience of Reiki if you create your comfortable space to relax while receiving it. It is helpful to remember that Reiki energy is always guided by the needs of your mind-body-spirit at that moment. Just a minute of centering yourself in your thoughts and welcoming the loving energy of Reiki into your heart space before the agreed upon appointment time is all it takes to engage and receive.

How will I feel after
a Reiki session?

The experience of Reiki treatment is unique for every individual. A feeling of deep relaxation is virtually universal.

Body, emotions, mind, and spirit are all affected, bringing about a sense of serenity, security, and well-being. Some people may have out-of-body or other mystical experiences. Paradoxical feelings of being relaxed and alert, detached while having enhanced clarity, and vulnerable yet safe are common.

What should I do after
a Reiki session?

You will feel lighter and more relaxed. Some people have more energy and some want a nap. Every "body" is unique.

Stay hydrated and try to be mindful of what the rest of your day looks like. I've had clients who have had a big test or event and they come in prior to relax beforehand. Everyone is different. But being able to honor the time you took out for yourself is important.

A nice healthy meal is a good idea also after.

How does Reiki work
from a distance?

Copy of Untitled Design (2)_edited.png

Distance Reiki works on the principle that energy is not confined by time or space. Reiki practitioners use focused intention and specific techniques to send healing energy to a person, place, or situation, regardless of their physical location.

Universal Energy Connection:

Reiki operates on the belief that everything is interconnected through universal life energy. This energy can be directed across time and space.

Symbol Activation:

Reiki practitioners trained in second-degree Reiki or higher use a specific sacred symbol (commonly known as the "Distance Symbol") to connect with the recipient energetically. This symbol bridges the physical distance.

Intention and Focus:

The practitioner sets a clear intention to send healing energy to the recipient and visualizes the energy reaching them.

What happens during a
distance Reiki session?

Initial Connection:
I may connect with the recipient beforehand (via phone, video call, or email) to discuss intentions, areas of focus, and any concerns.

Relaxation for the Recipient:
At the agreed-upon time, the recipient is encouraged to find a quiet, comfortable space to relax, meditate, or simply remain open to receiving the energy.

The Practitioner’s Process:
I enter a meditative state and visualize the recipient or their name/location.
Using Reiki symbols, I channel and direct healing energy to the recipient.
Practitioners may focus on specific areas or chakras if requested or follow their intuition.

How do I know you're

actually doing something?

Questioning distance Reiki may sound like a rude or cynical question for someone to ask, but it’s a fair question. I do understand that distance Reiki has its skeptics, especially if there is no contact by phone or email immediately before or after the session.

Skeptics just need to have an open mind and give it a chance to work. Some people may not feel anything right away. They can be blocked from trauma or skepticism and I would offer them to give it a try and see how they feel the days after. Reiki's effects may unfold gradually over a few days or even weeks as your body integrates the energy. Many clients report improved sleep, a heightened sense of clarity, or a deep sense of calm days after a session. The benefits can last as long as the balance and alignment remain intact. If life stressors or old patterns re-emerge, the benefits may diminish over time, which is why regular sessions can help maintain balance.

Ultimately, the client needs to trust the practitioner, and this is why I offer phone consults or I allow time before all appointments to answer any questions.

Reiki & other forms of holistic treatments work in conjunction with regular medical treatments and there are no interactions with medications or treatments. They complement whatever treatment you are receiving and are non-invasive. Unlike massage or reflexology, Reiki does not involve manipulating tissue and just works with energy fields. Reiki does not and should not replace your current medical treatment.
